I didn't plan to end up in insurance. I planned to make it in music. What happened in between taught me more about discipline, identity, and building a life than anything else ever has.
There's a version of this story I used to be embarrassed about. The music didn't work out. I ended up selling insurance. It felt like settling, like the backup plan had become the plan.
That's not how I see it anymore.
Because what sales actually taught me, at a level music never could, was how to operate under pressure, how to build real relationships, how to hear no thirty times and show up on the thirty-first. Those aren't just sales skills. They're life skills. They're the skills that built everything I have.
Music Taught Me Craft. Sales Taught Me Resilience.
I don't regret the music years. That chapter taught me discipline, creativity, and what it feels like to pour yourself into something you love. But the music industry also taught me something darker, that talent alone means nothing if you don't know how to move in the world.
Sales flipped the script. In sales, the outcome is binary. You close or you don't. There's nowhere to hide behind potential, behind promise, behind "I'm still working on it." You either delivered this week or you didn't. That kind of accountability, when you actually embrace it rather than resent it, is one of the most transformative things a man can experience.
The Identity Shift Nobody Talks About
The hardest part of the transition wasn't learning the product or building the pipeline. It was letting go of how I'd defined myself. For years I was "the music guy." That identity felt meaningful. Sales felt transactional by comparison.
What I didn't understand then is that identity isn't what you do, it's how you do it. I brought the same creative energy, the same hunger, the same obsession with craft to sales that I'd brought to music. And suddenly it stopped feeling like a compromise and started feeling like a calling.
What This Video Is Really About
This isn't a story about insurance. It's a story about what happens when you stop fighting where life has put you and start extracting everything it has to offer. Watch the full video, and if you're in a chapter that doesn't look like what you planned, this one's for you.
